The Reade family business was formed in Wolverhampton, England. The family manufactured pharmaceutical chemicals under the name Reade Brothers Co. Ltd., which was founded in 1773. Just over one hundred years later, Elizabeth Reade, a successful industrial chemist, relocated the family specialty chemical manufacturing business, RMC, to North America.
In 1905, RMC began size reducing non-ferrous materials to manufacture a conductive paste product. This marked the beginning of an extremely successful venture in the particle business for the Reade family. In 1941, the RMC Metal Powder division was opened in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The company manufactured and delivered a large amount of non-ferrous metal powders to various government and industrial markets all over the Americas. During the Civil War, the RMC Metal Powder division received two U.S. Army/ U.S. Navy “E” awards for excellence.
Despite the success of RMC, Charles Reade Sr., the sole owner of the business at the time, sold one hundred percent ownership interest in RMC to a large American customer. RMC is now a division of Magnesium Elektron, which is headquartered in England.
In 1983, Charles F. Reade, Jr. established Reade Advanced Materials as a new family business unit. Reade Advanced Materials is a successful manufacturer, value-add processor, and global “factory-packed” distributor of higher technology metal, alloy, mineral, ceramic, polymer, composite, enzyme, nano, and custom compositions.
On November 18, 2004, the employees of Reade received the award of excellence for community outreach from General Gordon Sullivan, the president of the Association of the U.S. Army. A volunteer military chaplain, Reade provides on-call pastoral care services to the National Guard, Reserve components, and other soldiers around New England.
In the summer of 2005, Reade is plans to participate in a trade mission to Brazil in conjunction with the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The mission will provide the opportunity for Reade to meet with Brazilian customers and prospect among higher tech Brazilian companies.
